New York Day Two Part Two

New York Day Two Part Two

I met up with Mahari and insisted that we go to one of the most famous landmark I know… the Empire State Building (images of King Kong and Meg Ryan in Sleepless in Seattle) and Mahari happily obliged! He has been working in New York for over three years and has never even been there!!

The Empire State Building is a 102-story art deco skyscraper in New York City, New York at the intersection of Fifth Avenue and West 34th Street. Its name is derived from the nickname for the state of New York. It stood as the world’s tallest building for more than forty years, from its completion in 1931 until construction of the World Trade Center‘s North Tower was completed in 1972.[citation needed] Following the destruction of the World Trade Center in 2001, the Empire State Building again became the tallest building in New York City. *Wikipedia Definition… Thanks Wiki!

It was reasonably warm when we first bought the tickets on the ground floor.. but when we finally reached the 86th floor the winds were viciously cold!! I was really glad to have brought my (borrowed) thick coat! It was incredibly windy and was a bit foggy but the views were spectacular! Took some lovely photos and here they are!

Second Day in New York Part 1 United Nations

Second Day in New York Part 1 United Nations

Was invited out to lunch by Brunei Officials who work for the United Nations! Had to use a cab TAXi to their office as I had NO IDEA how to get there. (It turned out that it was really easy, the New York street system are all in grids so it was just a matter of walking down the right block!)

The driver was from Namibia and had been living in New York for 38 years! He said New York is unlike any other city in America, it is so culturally diverse that if you took the time to look long enough, you will find someone from every country in the world living and working in New York! He also gave me some valuable advice, always look down when crossing the street.. Many first time visitors spend so much time looking up at skyscrapers, many are mowed down by traffic!!

Finally arrived at the United Nations Building for my lunch date, was shown in to the Brunei Office and I have never been so proud to be Bruneian. The office was AWESOME and it was right infront of the UN building! Quickly took this picture when no one was looking!

Met up with the Brunei officials who took me to lunch at a nearby Thai restaurant. One of them really stood out, he was an old student of my mums and my sister’s friend. He is well travelled having been to so many countries before working in New York, infact he ordered our food in perfect Thai!

He asked about my family and talk revolved around my dad. He has gone through something similar and offered kind words of advice that touched me. He was also terribly intelligent and conversation moved on to bigger things like politics and education. I thoroughly enjoyed the intensity of our conversation. However, we did end on a much lighter note as we talked about Giant, the latest humongous supermarket in Brunei. This well travelled intelligent man was impressed that indomee cost 10 cents there!! :)

They dropped me off at the UN building as I couldnt resist doing some major exploring. Been researching on the UN a lot in January to get my students ready for the BGIC ISB Global conference and here I was! In the building where it all actually happens!!

Sabrina, a nice girl I met at the office offered to take me around and I am glad she did! The place was HUGE!! Outside the building were many many beautiful sculptures looking out on a river! We then went inside and went to the gift shops first where I bought UN piggy banks for Odie, Amar and Ka DIna. Then we went up to see a show on political cartoons and other exhibits. The UN does so much good for the world, it was an amazing feeling to be in the same space where people meet to change the world everyday. I felt humbled and wondered how I change the world by just being an ordinary Secondary English teacher… Well, it took me this far didn’t it??

Some photos of UN

Have noticed that my English is turning American much to the dismay of my darling usband! Just to annoy him, I shall say elevators, garbage cans, erbs, faucets, preesentations, taxis, sidewalk , gonna, wanna, hafta and yankee! (Evil Laugh)

First Night in New York

First Night in New York

Just couldn’t resist putting this in!

Was doing some final packing for the trip when Bubbles squeezed into a very small gap in my suitcase… I think she was trying to tell me something…

Arrived in New York at 10pm at JFK airport… I highly recommend using Cathay Pacific for long haul flights and they have these new fendangle seats that slide down instead of tip back! They also come with a fancy 9 inch TV! What I thought was a lovely touch was the way they put films and tv shows that are based in New York on the flight to New York! Classics like Tom Hanks ‘You got Mail’ and the latest one by Disney called Enchanted. I  thoroughly enjoyed I AM LEGEND although my scream of terror when the zombies came killing, I did wake up several people around me!

Anyway, so I arrive in JFK at 10pm… then I had to line up FOREVER to get through immigration!! About an hour and a half! I didnt need a visa to go to the US but I wished I did because the visa line flew by while ours was a crawl! FINALLY got out at 11.45pm… (note** they charge you US$3.00 to get a trolley for luggage) lugging my laptop bag and incredibly heavy suitcase out of the terminal where I was met by Shahdon’s friend Mahari who was working in New York! He was lovely, he managed to book a room at the Hiltons where my convention was taking place and he was really really nice!

You know how when you meet people for the first time, it can go three ways. First, very awkward! You struggle to find something to say.. Second, you need time to warm up.. making small talk before diving in.. and the third is when you get on like a house on fire, it is as if you have been friends for ages and you feel incredibly comfortable with each other.

Mahari was the third!! We talked as if we knew eachother for ages! What a lovely welcome!

So finally checked into the Hiltons at midnight! And with love to my little sister, Dodie, I religiously took pictures of my room before I unpacked and passed out on the bed.. with my smelly green pillow that I brought from home.

My last thought before falling asleep?

“Holy S**t! I am in New York!!”

!**This bed was seriously comfy although the pillows were too small to be comfortable with. Solved this by sleeping with two extra pillows!

Back home..

Back home..

I am so sorry!! I was so busy with work while I was in the US that I didn’t have much time to write … Now that I am safe at home, I can now go back to my very neglected blog!

First of all, for those who didn’t know where I went, have a guess with this picture…

Yes! Yes! I was in NEW YORK NEW YORK!!

Even though it was for work, even though I only had two days to see the sights, even though I had to be in a stupid plane for TWENTY HOURS being elbowed by a smelly woman with really really bad BO )… I was in New York and I loved every second!

I was there for a TESOL convention at the Hilton for four days! What an amazing experience! Will slowly write up on the sights I saw in the next few days…

Mind you, it is very very nice to be home. Feel like baking again.. :)
